Kevin Anderson’s US Open loss a minor setback

The 2022 U.S. Open featured brilliant tennis in both the men’s and women’s brackets, and now the tournament has crowned its champions. No. 1 seed Iga Świątek defeated No. 5 Ons Jabeur in the women’s final on Saturday. No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz defeated No. 5 seed Casper Ruud in the men’s final on Sunday.

Alcaraz now becomes the youngest world No. 1 ever on the men’s side at just 19 years old. This is his first Grand Slam championship. Świątek was already No. 1 in the world, and has now won three Grand Slam titles.

Serena Williams’ last dance was the big story at the start of the tournament. Williams was eventually eliminated by Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in round three, but not before she knocked out the tournament’s No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit.

The fourth round featured two big upsets in the men’s bracket. No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev was knocked out in four sets by No. 23 seed Nick Kyrgios, while No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal was defeated by No. 22 seed Frances Tiafoe. Tiafoe is the only American man remaining in the field. He’ll have a marquee semifinal match against 19-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. Casper Ruud faces Karen Khachanov in the other semi.

The women’s side went through No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek. Swiatek is a two-time French Open champion after defeating Coco Gauff in the final earlier this year. Swiatek knocked out American Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals.
